Notes

Chill the glass and cut the cube first. Both are done before anything is poured -- the stir is short, and hunting for a cube mid-build gives the drink time to warm.
Equal parts is the whole point. 1:1:1 is the modern standard ratio (older recipes ran gin-forward, 1.5:1:1). Start here and adjust to taste, not the other way around.
Sweet vermouth oxidizes fast. Refrigerate it after opening and use it within 4-6 weeks, or it turns flat and dulls the whole drink.
Stir, never shake. Shaking bruises and clouds a Negroni with air bubbles for no upside -- there is no citrus or egg here that needs the emulsification a shake provides.
Campari is not substitutable. Any London dry gin works, but Campari is the defining bittersweet note -- swap it and you have made a different drink. Swapping the GIN, on the other hand, gives you a Boulevardier: 2-Minute Boulevardier is the same Campari-and-vermouth spine over rye.
Adapted Classic, credited to Count Camillo Negroni, Florence, c. 1919, who asked his bartender to strengthen his Americano with gin instead of soda. IBA official cocktail. https://iba-world.com/negroni/
